Melling has re-engineered the traditional small block Chevy oil pump with newly designed asymmetrical helical cut gears. Set to debut at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) trade show in Indianapolis, the "Shark" pump offers smoother oil flow than a traditional spur gear oil pump along with reduced power requirements and higher volume. The pump still incorporates a cast iron housing that is now equipped with the all new steel helical cut gears.

Melling engineers improved the heart-beat of the traditional internal gear pump with significantly smoother flow through the use of a helical asymmetrical gear set. The new gear design provides the engine with improved oil flow without the usual pulsing found in traditional gear pumps. The reduction in the pressure ripple from the pump also provide benefits to the distributor and camshaft drives. Intermittent pulsing can affect precise engine timing via small amounts of spark scatter as the distributor and camshaft gears are jerked by the uneven pulsing. The new smoother flowing helical gear pumps significantly reduce this problem. Consider the following benefits.
